The purpose of this document is to assist those individuals who are responsible for printed circuit board design and layout by detailing the basic considerations associated with the assembly process.
Experience has shown that the application of the design principles contained in this document offers efficient, reliable board designs. Automatic component placement provides the consistency required to ensure the highest levels of circuit board quality, throughput and process control. When properly planned and implemented, automatic component placement provides significant cost savings in the printed circuit board assembly process. The benefits realised from automatic circuit board assembly processes span all areas of manufacturing. Ultimately, all of these benefits result in improved products and reduced production cost.

Some point to keep in mind:

  1. Simplify the design and reduce the number of parts.
  2. Standardize and use common parts and materials.
  3. Design for ease of fabrication.
  4. Design within process capabilities and avoid unneeded surface finish requirements.
  5. Mistake-proof product design and assembly (poka-yoke).
  6. Design for parts orientation and handling.
  7. Minimize flexible parts and interconnections.
  8. Design for ease of assembly.
